2010 Books Read
Jan. 1st, 2011 11:55 amMy book goal for 2010 was 100. I made it to 104, including Audiobooks, which I decided to count because they're a huge time investment and I ended up getting really into them. Grand totals are 39 Audiobooks, 65 read books. I listen to them at work to drown out the noise and when I'm driving back and forth to work. I did not include the texts that I read for school because I never sat down and read from cover to cover. Around July, I started exploring some e-reader apps to decide if an e-reader would be a smart choice for me and I fell in love with the convenience of a hand held device and not having to lug around books, especially since I'm always in the middle of two or three at a time. New Year, New Friend's List
Jan. 12th, 2009 10:24 pmI just did a major friend's cut. Some people I cut because they don't use LJ anymore but I'm friends with in other places. Others, I couldn't even remember who they were, that's how long it was since they posted. I also cut some people because I found that I'm skipping their posts. Still others, I cut because I have major problems with the way they handle themselves and the demands they make on their friends list, such as not ever being allowed to give an opinion that is different from the poster's opinion. I've been avoiding LJ because I didn't want to deal with reading such nonsense. So there. Done. It's been a long time coming. Bottom line, new streamlined friend's list with only those people I'm actually going to read and comment on.
Please feel free to take this opportunity to de-friend me if you feel the need. No hard feelings.

Something to think about...
Dec. 11th, 2008 06:35 amJoe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. With his first swallow of water, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to ensure their safety and that they work as advertised. All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer's medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance - now Joe gets it too.
He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe's bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.
In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained.
Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for the laws to stop industries from polluting our air.
He walks on the government-provided sidewalk to subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.
Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe's employer pays these standards because Joe's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union.
If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he'll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn't think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.
It is noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe's deposit is federally insured by the FDIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe's money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.
Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime. Joe also forgets that his in addition to his federally subsidized student loans, he attended a state funded university.
Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards to go along with the tax-payer funded roads.
He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers' Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans.
The house didn't have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification.
He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn't have to.
Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn't mention that the beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day. Joe agrees: "We don't need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I'm a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have."

More Applebee's
Apr. 4th, 2008 04:23 pmLast week I got a phone call from the GM of the franchises in Southern Mississippi. Today, I got a phone call from the GM of the actual Applebee's restaurant in Gulfport. He was incredibly apologetic and told me that he honestly wouldn't have known the laws himself but now that the correct way to handle a nursing mother has brought to his attention, he is going to make sure that his staff is educated. He told me he's been with Applebee's for eight years and hasn't encountered this situation before now and he hadn't even heard of the nurse-in's that took place around the country last year. All in all, I'm very impressed by the way Applebee's has handled this.
Applebee's
Mar. 31st, 2008 01:13 pmI got a phone call from Applebee's. From the GM of the franchise group from southern Mississippi. He asked me to relay to him what happened. Apologized profusely. Told me that nursing mothers are ALWAYS welcome in all Applebee's restaurants. Told me that all of his staff will be educated on the topic. Then said he hoped I hadn't lost any loyalty to Applebee's as a result and said he'll send me "something" in the mail to encourage me to return. I'm excited that I got an actual phone call instead of a stupid form letter. Yay!

Friend posts in personal journal asking for opinions.
I comment with my opinion.
Invariably, some ASSHAT comments that my opinion is stupid because it doesn't match theirs.
This is in a personal journal, not a community where you would expect that sort of stupidity.
I'm over it.
I've always believed that stepping into someone's personal journal is a bit like stepping into their home. You should show respect for them and their guests.
And these idiots who love to insult people's opinions and choices...can you imagine just walking into a two person conversation on the street and interjecting because you don't agree? No. Then don't freaking do it in a two person conversation happening in a journal.
/End rant about morons.

May. 19th, 2007 11:04 pmThis pregnancy exhaustion is really starting to get to me. I was just thinking of how late it must be and how I probably haven't stayed up this late in forever. I was still trying to get over the shock of my eyes still being open...then I looked at the clock.
It's 11:05.
That's really saying something when anything past 10:00 makes you feel like you're pulling an all nighter.

I am so completely and totally ashamed to be from New Orleans right now. This is what is happening on our streets. These were the people shooting at the helicopters when they were trying to rescue the bastards (and their looted tv's) off their roofs. There are just no words to describe this...
